Rugby isn’t all just big pecs and thunder thighs.

Take a look at the trailer for Scrum, the upcoming documentary about gay rugby players and conventional notions of masculinity in the sport.

Directed by Poppy Stockell, the film will follow the story of three players on the Sydney Convicts, a mostly gay rugby squad with their hopes set on winning the coveted Bingham Cup.

Said Cup is a biannual event that gathers 40 of the world’s best gay-inclusive rugby teams to compete for the honor of most athletic and simultaneously most gay-friendly squad. And, yes, that tournament is as amazing to watch as you’re hoping.

Rugby, like many sports, has a history of being less than warm toward gay athletes, although that’s beginning to change. Stars like Keegan Hirst, Brennan Bastyovanszky, and Aki Muzutani are paving the way forward for a new generation of more open-minded athlete culture.

Notions of masculinity and sexuality, and how those play into such an erotic, contact-heavy sport like rugby, are explored in Scrum. Take a look at the trailer below.
